The SVQ 3 SSCYP at SCQF Level 7, is a work-based qualification aimed at those working with children and young people e.g. nursery practitioners; residential child care practitioners.  For those working in nurseries, this qualification meets the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration requirements for practitioners.  For those working in residential child care, you will also be required to complete an HNC Social Services to meet the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration requirements for practitioners. Candidates will be required to complete four mandatory and four option units which will be discussed and agreed by the candidate and their assessor as appropriate to the current job role and practice.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but candidates must be employed in the children and young people sector and must have the approval of your employer. 

What you study

The content of the four mandatory units includes;

  • Effective communication and recording

  • Health, safety and security in your work setting

  • Developing your practice through reflection and learning

  • Safeguarding children and young

The content of the option units will be specific to area of practice.

After the course

Nursery employees will be able to register with SSSC as a child care practitioner.  Those working in residential child care will be required to complete an HNC Social Services to register with SSSC as a residential child care practitioner.  Please note, new staff to this residential child care from January 2017 will be required to progress to complete a BA or PDA at SCQF Levels 8 and 9 in Residential Child Care to fully meet the SSSC new requirements.
